Hello! And welcome to Dandelion Seeds, an illustrated newsletter that’s hand-drawn and hand-lettered, from my desk to yours.
Last week, we kicked off a brand-new illustrated essay series called “Home is a Window Seat” (and if you’re just joining us now, here’s the prologue).
This second installment is all about arrivals, and as it just so happened, I was listening to an audiobook over the weekend while scanning the illustrations for this chapter — a novel called The Measure, by Nikki Erlick. And as two of the characters arrive in Venice for the first time, a particular passage stopped me in my tracks:
“They could feel it in each breath they took, their lungs filling with the exhilaration of being someplace new. Their minds gleefully tried to accomplish a thousand tasks at once, taking in the sights and sounds and scents, every element of awareness heightened, knowing that this was special, a bold and bracketed moment in time, something that must be remembered.”
How gorgeous is that phrase, “a bold and bracketed moment in time”? My first journey to London was such a time for me, and I’d love to hear about the places or seasons of life that phrase evokes for you.
Here’s to being on our way,
Candace
I discovered your newsletter at just the right time because I’m about to travel on a plane and move to a new place. For someone who doesn’t like flying, I’m finding your perspective on it comforting. I’ve decided to start looking upon it as exciting instead of anxiety inducing because it’s allowing me to get to where I want to be 😄
a recipe for "Living"
1cup.-Dreams, aspirations, hopes
1 1/2tbl sp.-stories read, myths, rumors
1cup -dynamic environment (bus, train, plane, new path...)
1 dash-youthful abandon, (terrified but brave willingness can be substituted)
add to taste and availability- friends, partners, co-conspiritors
Mix all ingredients til frothy, but not stiff and serve with any local cuisine that is new to you.
Viola!
I think one must understand what it is to wander, before one can truly appreciate what it is to "home"
Peace.
