The Owl and the Meadowlark
Revisiting a classic.
Hello there! And welcome to Dandelion Seeds, an illustrated newsletter in search of the magic in everyday moments.
On Sunday night, I sat down at our dining room table and set up an assembly line — golden evening sunlight streaming through our windows, a vase of deep blue and purple hydrangeas on the table beside me.
One by one, I began filling a stack of envelopes with the new set of stickers I’ve recently made, which I am thrilled to be sending to more than 50 new and renewing paid subscribers. As much as I love how Dandelion Seeds is a digital offering — one I’m able to easily share with you, to so many different corners of the world — it also feels so meaningful to send something tangible your way…
A little bit of joy you can hold.

Today, I want to revisit the story that inspired what I like to think of as the star of the sticker sheet — the meadowlark perched on a fence post.
I painted it for our first-ever community series, The Sounds of Home, and the beautiful piece it accompanies was written by
. Two summers ago, she wrote about the calls of two very different birds — and how they helped her find her way to healing and peace. Her story is a timeless one, and I’m honored to share it with you again today.
With love,
Candace

A story going straight to my sternum. Thank you, Candace. Both of these birds bring magic to me. I love to hear the plaintive hoots of owls seeking each other in the night. And to hear a meadowlark pierce the crystaline silence of the desert stirs the heart's joy every time. Thank you for this story.
I love your personal touch, Candace. It makes me feel a little guilty about posting only my insipid little stories. Maybe I can send out elk seeds to my subscribers so they can grow their own elk. Or Cheerio donut tree seeds.
I’m not really sure if gift giving is my gift. But I certainly appreciate that it’s yours.
Meadowlarks!!!!
