Hello there! And welcome to Dandelion Seeds, an illustrated newsletter that is hand-painted and hand-lettered, from my desk to yours.
I first moved abroad from my home state of Virginia more than fifteen years ago.
And yet somehow, the longer I’ve lived outside the US, the more invested I’ve come to feel in its presidential elections.
Last week, I was proud to cast my vote for Kamala Harris. I’ve always loved her story; how her dad was from Jamaica and her mom was from South India. But I love it even more now that I’m a mom myself, and Jose and I are raising our daughters to be third culture kids.
I thought long and hard about what to share here today, and one of the things that has spoken to me the most over the past week is a passage from Kamala’s own concession speech.
I’ve hand-lettered it below, and I hope her words send a little light your way — the light of a billion brilliant stars.
With love,
Candace
As I watched Kamala's speech, I was moved to tears myself when I saw the young women in the crowd crying. Their countenance reflecting fear and despair. It broke my heart. I silently prayed that their tears would transform into LIGHT and ENERGY. May all women know their power and influence in this world, even when it seems dark and hopeless. Years ago I studied stars and this one fact blew my mind: "In simplest terms, a star “shines” or “releases energy” or “emits light” when its light travels at a specific speed and then suddenly is blocked or hits something…we are actually seeing the moment each “little sun” releases their energy that had been waiting and fighting to get outside of itself." It is only when a star is BLOCKED or HITS SOMETHING that it actually finds it brilliance. It is TIME for each one of us to FIND OUR BRILLIANCE. Keep reading to your sweet little girls, Candace Rose, for the future truly is in the hearts and hands of mothers shaping the minds of their children.
Thank you for your kind boldness in sharing this beautiful, inspiring post
