Thanks again, Candace, for evoking a wonderful memory. I read your work because it reminds me of the wonderful things I experienced during my career, and those wonderful memories are what make other memories more bearable.

My 3 year old daughter played under a poinsettia tree in our Blantyre, Malawi yard, where she searched for flying ants to eat. Poinsettia red, the blue jacaranda petals that covered the streets and sidewalks, the avocados that fell with a bang on our steel roof in the morning, our African yard was a place of beauty.

Sometimes, when the snow hangs on here until late April, I miss that Malawi yard where my tow-headed little butterfly dined on her savory prey.

Thank you for sharing such an evocative memory of your own, Switter -- I can almost hear the avocados falling myself, and as the blooming of the jacaranda trees (and subsequent falling of their petals) is one of my favorite times of year here in Uruguay, I can picture that carpet of purple-blue as well. It absolutely seems like the kind of home that would stay with you long after you said goodbye to it.

I'm so glad you love the photo too, LL -- I knew I had to find a way to share it here, as it was the inspiration for this entire essay series, so a sneak peek post felt like the perfect way to do that 🤍

Oh my, that book recommendation! I immediately checked it out of the library (digital edition is the only one available) and it's fantastic. I can definitely see the similarities with what you're doing in your work.
