Thank you, Candace. This was a day I needed a little inspiration.

“whether or not

you have ever dared to be happy,

whether or not

you have ever dared to pray.”

Mary’s poem reminds me of two others that I love.

From Robert Browning’s Pippa’s Song from Pippa Passes:

The year's at the spring,

And day's at the morn;

Morning's at seven;

The hill-side's dew-pearl'd;

The lark's on the wing;

The snail's on the thorn;

God's in His heaven,

All's right with the world!

And from Thoreau:

“Whenever a man hears it

He is young,

And nature is in her spring,

Whenever he hears it

It is a new world

And a free country

And the gates of Heaven

Are not shut against him.”

I'm so glad Mary Oliver's words found you at the right time last week, Switter, and both of the excerpts you shared are perfect echoes of "Morning Poem" as well -- I think we might all be in need of a little encouragement to greet each day right now as if the world is new and "the year's at the spring" 🙏🙏

I wasn't familiar with this poem of Mary Oliver's, so thank you for sharing it and your illustration. I feel nurtured as a result of both.

Candace, Mary Oliver was a genius, wasn't she? Beautiful and something to mull over, bringing hope and luscious imagery. And, your painting a wonderful companion to her words. A very good way to start a Tuesday in July. Thank you!

Yes! I couldn't agree more with you, Gayle -- she was an absolute genius, and a timeless voice to learn from and live by. I've been thinking about doing a special essay to commemorate her birthday in September, and hearing how much she means to everyone throughout this series of summer sketches has solidified that idea 😊

Thanks so much as always for reading and being here! 🤍

We all carry a bit of Mary in our hearts with us. What a brilliant and tender soul she was. The one thing I love about the morning poem is that small seed of hope at the beginning. Every morning the world is created. And so are we, day after day.

Another wonderful poem to perfectly match a beautiful painting. I am now fortunate enough to live in one of the lands of ‘the orange’ 🍊 here in Spain and will always think of that poem as I pass by the orange groves or a fruit laden tree.

Candace, this is lovely. Thanks for what you do. I don't know how the restack-button works. Still trying to understand what a paid subscription is too.

Jennifer! Thank you so much for reading, and for your kind words -- it is wonderful to hear from you here and to reconnect with you on Substack 🤍

And thank you so much for asking about paid subscriptions as well -- it's something that Substack offers where you can subscribe to support a publication (either on a monthly or annual basis), and the writer will often offer additional posts or community offerings for paid subscribers. I send out an additional monthly post, often going behind the scenes of an illustrated essay (and it often includes a free art download as well!), and I also mail a 5x7 print, as an extra way of saying thank you for your support 😊

I hope that helps explain paid subscriptions a little more, and please let me know if you have any other questions about it! (And here is the page for Dandelion Seeds, just in case you'd like to take a closer look: https://dandelionseeds.substack.com/subscribe)

I have trouble with becoming a paid subscriber too. It won’t let you in app but I can’t find another avenue either. Substack makes this unnecessarily difficult.

Hello Maureen! I'm so sorry you've had some trouble navigating that aspect of Substack. From what I understand, they currently don't offer the option to upgrade subscriptions inside the app because Apple takes 30% from in-app purchases...I'd always wondered why we can't manage our subscriptions on the app as well, and when I heard that, it made a lot more sense.

I think it's a lot more straightforward to sign up for paid subscriptions on a desktop browser (for instance, for Dandelion Seeds, you just need to visit this page: https://dandelionseeds.substack.com/subscribe), but please let me know if you have any more questions and I'd be more than happy to try and help :) 🤍
