It truly can! I'm not sure if you've heard of Poetry Unbound, but it's one of my absolute favorite podcasts -- it's a part of OnBeing (another podcast obsession of mine...) and is hosted by the wonderful Padraig O'Tuama. He recently released a book to go along with the podcast, and I think you'll love the subtitle: "50 poems to open your world" 😊
I love how you put that, Elizabeth 🙌 Sketching absolutely is the ultimate mindfulness, and it's been an incredible tool in helping me be more present in my life -- whether I'm traveling or at home. I even wrote about this a while back for National Geographic! In case you'd like to read it, here's the link :)
Beautiful as always, with the additional depth of the poems. You’ve chosen my three favorites. At some point I would love to hear more about your sketchbooks, and how you do such intricate work in an informal setting.
I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed this, Robin 🙏 And I love your idea to share more about my sketchbooks -- that might even be fun to explore in this month's essay for paid subscribers, thank you for the suggestion!
Hey Candace, one of my favorite things about living in other cultures was food shopping, whether in an open air suq or a Soviet Gum (“goom”) or wherever. I would love to see your take on that part of life.
Switter, I love this idea! Funnily enough, perhaps my absolute favorite painting in my acrylic ink sketchbook is one I did a few years ago of a row of little spice packets, in an outdoor market (or feria) in Montevideo. It didn't quite fit the theme of these summer sketches, but thank you for the great suggestion to explore food one day soon 🙌
PS -- I'd love to read *your* take on the same subject!
I’ll work on something. I recently posted a story about shopping for a Mother’s Day gift for my wife at an open air market in one of the FSU republics. Not my best moment, but I’m still loved.
I love the way just a line or two of poetry can open up the world in new ways. Thank you!

Drew Lanham is such a brilliant poet. Love these paintings, ekphrastic in so many ways 😍
Yes! He's truly one of my favorites. His book, "Sparrow Envy," is packed with so many lines I adore -- I need to start quoting him here more often 😊
I love listening to him read this one: https://emergencemagazine.org/poem/joy-is-the-justice-we-give-ourselves/
