Thank you, Candace, for this wonderful story. Softball played a huge part in my childhood. It was the "baseball" game that girls could play too. And you and I must be listening to the same muse because I'll be posting a story next Monday about watching a minor league baseball game in Reno, NV. Totally, different take, of course, but isn't that the way things go, especially on Substack. It's as if we're sometimes all in sync on some weird thing in common.

I love your story. You write as vividly as you paint. I am so new to Substack that I don't know what a paid subscription is.

your writing is fast becoming a favourite read in this space. i smiled at the thought of being drawn to the arepas logo (the food also sounds delicious!). i love that this artistic detail was the bridge to understanding how united passions can create a home, even away from home. <3

I love how you drew a soccer ball and a softball together. (Disclaimer; I write software to manage soccer tournaments, so I’m biased) Locally, we have two public sports parks. .. 13,000 people…

Up until about ten years ago, each contained both baseball diamonds and soccer fields. But the two sports could not get along. The police chief (also the parks department … I know, makes no sense) would get calls all hours of the day and night from board members of each sport, complaining about the other. He got so frustrated that he designated one park for soccer and the other for baseball… ne’er the twain should ever meet again.

Sorta sad that was the resolution, but there is just no reasoning with baseball people! 😀 … I said I was biased … it looks like we could learn a thing or two from Uruguay!! ⚽️🥎🫶🥎⚽️
